Why you should pick your hypotheses BEFORE looking at your data

While sitting in statistics class my prof would often repeat the importance of deciding the hypotheses one wants to test before looking at the data. He would scoff at the idea of data-mining and claim anyone that formed their hypotheses after looking at data was doomed to failure.

He never said why.
