Everyone is talking about artificial intelligence these days actually if you look at searches and mention of artificial intelligence online you can see a clear exponential trend AI is not new it actually started over 65 years ago but today we finally have a cost efficient way to store transfer and compute a massive amount of data in a way that was never possible before.
In 2017 I have been wondering the growth of AI industry and I have to say to you that I’m quite amazed by the attention AI is receiving recently. At some point I realized that all the tech newsletters I’m subscribed whenever I receive an email, almost every time there are news about AI.
It’s happening all around.
Almost all high tech magazines.
Developers are talking about AI.
Engineers are talking about AI.
Data Scientists are talking about AI.
Journalists are spreading the words about AI.
Entrepreneurs are brainstorming to come up with new ways of applying AI to improve their business.
Business Man are looking for new business models on top of AI.
I’m talking about AI.
Probably you too are talking about AI.

What? are you begging to stop? ok then, I get you. You also might think these news are biased? Maybe, but I will leave this at your own judgment. All these sometimes can be overwhelming, but this can be used as a prove of concept that AI is here to stay, for better or for worse, and nothing can stop the attention AI has won.
Why Now?
The main reasons for these vast popularity of AI are:
- More computing power:AI requires a lot of computing power, recently many advances have been made and complex deep learning models can be deployed and one of the great technology that made this possible are GPUs.
- More data: In order to have a useful AI-agent to make smart decisions like telling which item to recommend you next when shopping online or classify an object from an image, AI are trained on large data sets and big data enables us to do this more efficiently.
- Better algorithms: State of the art algorithms most of them based on the idea of Neural networks are constantly getting better results.
- Broad investment: universities, governments, startups and tech giants (Google, Amazon, Facebook, Baidu, Microsoft) are all investing heavily in AI.
AI is rapidly growing both as field of study and also as an economy.
AI From Academic Perspective
From scientific field perspective, day after day new researches are being conducted and everyday are emerging thought experiments and new ideas on how can we build better AI to serve people’s life for good, besides that, no one can argue against the fact that there are many folks both from academia and industry working hard to push the boundaries of what we know today and the current state of AI, the world as we know is changing so fast and we all want to see how awesome the future can be.
AI as Global Economy Booster
AI will contribute as much as $15.7 trillion to the world economy by 2030, according to a PwC report Wednesday. That’s more than the current combined output of China and India. - PwC says global GDP to be 14% higher in 2030 as a result of AI.
- ‘Man and machine together can be better than the human’.
