Editors

Ben Huberman. Editor in Chief. Ben Joined TDS in 2021 as Editor in Chief, and is particularly interested in the ways data science and ML intersect with social, cultural, and environmental issues. He was previously the head of editorial at Automattic and a senior editor at Longreads.

Ludovic Benistant. Editor. Hey everyone! I am Ludo, an editor at TDS! I started studying data science and machine learning in 2015, thanks to so many great online resources! The variety of areas that data science can touch and explore (from biology to outer space) made me fall in love with this field. I am thrilled to continue exploring these topics from a data angle by reading our authors’ articles.

Volunteer Editorial Associates

David Chen. Hello there! My name’s David Chen, and I am an associate editor with Towards Data Science (TDS) based in Toronto. TDS is the place to be if you’re looking to publish your insights into topics ranging from data science to machine learning. A little about me, my passion is in the field of bioinformatics and computational biology although my academic background reflects a medical sciences curriculum.

Andrew DeCotiis-Mauro. Hi! I’m currently a high school physics and chemistry teacher. I did my bachelors in chemistry and biochemistry at Montclair State University. I did the first year of the chemistry PhD program at Penn State University where I studied computational chemistry and I had my first experiences with high performance computing. I ended up going back to MSU to get my masters in chemistry.

Luke Gloege, Ph.D. Hi everyone! My name is Luke and I am a Climate Data Engineer at the Open Earth Foundation. My work is at the nexus of emerging web3 technologies and climate science. I am also really interested in the global carbon cycle. I enjoy reading/reviewing all the great TDS articles and it allows me to learn something new every day. When I’m away from my keyboard, I can usually be found either at the dog park, the record store, or a music venue around NYC.

Sunny Guha. Howdy! I am an Applied Scientist at Amazon Alexa. I mostly work on NLU, ASR and Recommendation systems. Before Amazon I was at MathWorks for 2 years working on the computer vision toolbox as a deep learning engineer. I have a Ph.D. in Physics with specialization in String Theory. In my free time I love hiking and brewing beer. I am currently at 24/48 of the New Hampshire 4000 footers. In my free time, I make deep learning related videos on Youtube.

Euge Inzaugarat. Hi everyone! My name is Eugenia and I am a new Editorial Associate at Towards Data Science (TDS) based in Buenos Aires, Argentina. I’m a biologist and have a Ph.D. in Immunology. After working for more than 10 years in Academia, I transitioned to the field of Data Science (DS). I have worked in non-profit organizations, education, agricultural-data-driven solutions, and big enterprise AI solutions. When I was starting my career in DS, I discovered Medium and TDS! I started writing posts because I love to communicate complex concepts in a simple way.

Pier Paolo Ippolito. Hi! My name is Pier and I have been part of the incredible Editorial Associate Team at Towards Data Science since 2019. During the past few years, I have been working at companies such as Swiss RE and SAS Institute in the Data & AI space. Rohan Joseph. Hello All, I’m Rohan, and currently an Editorial Associate for Towards Data Science. After my Undergrad in Electrical Engineering, I started my career in Data Science — which was a stroke of luck. And, after working as a Decision Scientist for three years, I fell in love with the field of analytics. Then, I decided to do a Master’s in a quantitative field, which led me to pursue my Master’s in Operations Research at Virginia Tech. Post my Master’s I moved to the Bay Area and currently working as a Data Scientist at Apple.

Gitansh Khirbat. Hello from the land down under! I am Gitansh, an Associate Editor for Towards Data Science based in Sydney. If you have come across or want to publish content related to NLP, deep learning, machine learning or data science in general, then it is highly likely that we have/will cross paths eventually.

Sophie Mann. Sophie is a new editorial associate, but isn’t new to editing. After working at The Daily Northwestern during undergrad at Northwestern University for four years, she’s now data analyst in Chicago with a Master’s from Harvard in Technology and Innovation. She loves running, baking, and crossword puzzles.

Sara A. Metwalli. Hello! I am Sara, and I am a Ph.D. candidate at Keio University. My research focuses on developing a quantum software debugging tool. Because I love software, I am an IBM Qiskit advocate; Qiskit is the Python package developed by IBM to help people learn and implement quantum algorithms. One of the things I am really passionate about is teaching, so I work as a CS instructor teaching kids how to code. I love learning new things because nothing beats that feeling when you understand something you first thought is complicated.

Carlos Mougan. Hi everyone, my name is Carlos Mougan, I currently am a Marie Curie Research Fellow and Ph.D. Candidate in the NoBias European Innovative Training Network. I have a passion for predictive modeling and its implications in society. I am very fortunate to have been able to pursue these passions at world-class research and public institutions. I really enjoy doing data science competitions and challenges.

Dimitris Panagopoulos. Hi! I am Dimitris from sunny Athens, Greece. I hold a Ph.D. in Pure Mathematics and have worked in various academic positions. Gradually my interests shifted to Data Science. I really enjoy reviewing articles for TDS so please keep sending them.

Gerasimos Plegas. Hi everyone! I’m Gerasimos and I joined the phenomenal TDS team as an Associate Editor in May 2019. I have degrees in Aeronautical Engineering & Telecommunications and Business Administration. With almost 2 decades occupied as an Aeronautical engineer, I realised early on the significance of data collection and utilisation to the industry. For the past 10 years, I have been extensively working on establishing and optimising a CMMS system which records, processes and analyses fleet data. At the same, I enjoy reading about data science concepts and making side-projects.

Christabelle Santos. Hi everyone! My name is Christabelle, although I’ve made everyone call me Christa since many a person has tried to butcher my name in quite a spectacular fashion. I’ve been a volunteer editor since Dec 2020 and a data scientist at a couple of consulting firms for a little under a decade. I love reviewing articles for TDS because it brings out the joy of learning in me. My personal mantra in life is “Continuous learning brings continuous improvement.” I wonder if anyone has yet said this. I am currently based out of Spain but ethnically and culturally am from India and my other interests include psychology, cybersecurity and hiking.

Manish Sharma. Manish is leading a machine learning team for an organization working in the health sector. His current work uses deep learning to predict the gain of function mutation (protein engineering) using protein structure (sequence information). He is currently based in Waterloo, Canada, and has over 10 years of experience working in the health, finance, and energy industry. He holds a Ph.D. in Physical chemistry. His interest includes reading, traveling, and teaching.
