A point in the genotype is mapped to a point in the phenotype. A small random change is introduced in the genotype, leading to a change in the phenotype. Genotype and phenotype space have different sizes, reducing the amount of possible phenotypes to what is expressible via genotype - i.e. reducing the search space.
