Alright, now we have the full disclosure. Let’s dive straight in.
If you’ve read my article – How To Go Into Data Science?, particularly at the part where I recommended a list of Books for beginners to kick started their journey in data science, this book – Confident Data Skills wasn’t in the list yet as I hadn’t read the book at the time of writing, not until now.
To be honest with you, I learned the skills mentioned in this book through trials and errors – basically mistakes and hard lessons – that I eventually documented the 5 lessons I have learned from data science in real working experience.
Don’t get me wrong.
I’m not saying that learning from your mistakes throughout your journey is not a good way.
It’s a good way, but perhaps not the best way.
What I’m saying is that learning from mentors – people who are already successful and have been through the path where you are now – is much more effective and is able to shorten your learning time tremendously by standing on their shoulders and learning from their experience.
YES, find mentors that can help your career path in Data science, be it in persons, books, courses, webinars, or coaching program.
And recently, I had the chance to read this book – Confident Data Skills written by Kirill Eremenko – the Founder and Director of SuperDataScience as well as the instructor of some of the top data science courses on Udemy.
Maybe you’re an aspiring data scientist who are just starting out and wants to learn from the best resources.
Maybe you’re already an analytics professional who wants to bring your career to the next level.
Or maybe you’re someone who is just curious of what data can do in this digital era where data is deemed to be another new oil.
I hope that by sharing my thought on this resource will give you a clearer direction of how you can improve your Data Science skills, for now and future.
Let’s get started!
Why this book – Confident Data Skills?
Okay I’ve got to tell you something – this book has zero code.
Yes, ZERO code.
This is not just another technical book that overwhelms you with tons of maths and code with little explanation on what’s going on behind the scenes.
In fact, the book is meant to guide you step by step to understand the complete data science workflow from start till the end of projects:
- Identify the question
- Data preparation (Data cleaning)
- Data analysis (Data exploration, machine Learning models etc.)
- Data Visualization
- Present your findings
So if you’ve always been wondering what data scientists do on daily basis, you’ll have a better understanding now.
I remember when I first started out in data science, I only focused on the 3rd and 4th steps. And I skipped the rest.
Little did I know that the first two steps – Identifying the question and data preparation are the most important steps in the workflow.
And I paid a huge price for that – my biggest lessons learned through the hard way and hard time.
I’m glad that this book does point out the obvious yet often forgotten or neglected by most aspiring data scientists or people who want to go into this field.
More than that, you’ll also see some of the use cases of data by top tech companies and how these affect our life as a consumer to show you the prevalence and importance of data.
Final Thoughts

Thank you for reading.
At the end of the day, data science is a broad field that covers different disciplines.
Admit it. Getting a job in data science is hard.
But it’s definitely possible, only if you’re on the right track and learning from the right resources.
I hope that by sharing my thought on this book will give you a clearer direction of how you can improve your data science skills, for now and future.
