Data Science in 2022 and Beyond

A bold vision for the future of work

In the 1980s and 90s, two things happened that would change work forever. The first was the introduction of the personal computer (PC) to business. Prior to the 1980s, computers were still very new to the business scene and using them required a high degree of understanding of computer hardware.

The second was when Microsoft released their new Windows platform with those PCs. Windows enabled a more user-friendly experience that empowered employees to take advantage of the power of computers for their own needs.

The impact on worker productivity was evident in the prophesies of many futurists who began making bold claims that most jobs would be replaced by computers by the year 2000. Thus, it goes without saying that because of these two influences, the nature of work changed forever.

Now replace the word “computers” with “artificial intelligence” and the prophecies of old sound familiar, right? Indeed, these same concerns have been reignited by recent advances in data science and the contributions those advances have made to artificially intelligent (AI) applications.

Is this a sign of the end of human work? Likely not. Just as the turn of the century didn’t bring about an entirely automated workforce (quite the opposite…
