Two years ago, I started my journey in data science. I decided to pursue my master’s in data science after working for 4 years in sports analytics. Throughout my time in graduate school, I found myself doing tons of research on the internet regarding data science concepts and Career Advice on how to break into the field. The purpose of this article is to introduce a list of Data professionals that really helped me grow as a data scientist. If you are new to data science, I highly encourage you to follow the following professionals.
1. Ken Jee
I came across Ken Jee on LinkedIn, and his channel really helped me with career advice and improving my technical skills. One of the best decisions I have made was joining his #66daysofdata challenge. Not only did I improve my technical skills during the challenge, but I also grew my network by meeting other data professionals that took part in the challenge. He also comes from a sports analytics background, which really motivated me to follow him. If you haven’t heard of the 66daysofdata challenge, I highly encourage you to check the link out below and join the challenge.
2. Alex Freberg
Many data scientists start as data analysts. Alex is a data analyst and probably the best to follow if you want to become a data analyst. SQL is one of the key skills any data scientist needs to master. Alex’s videos on teaching SQL really helped me improve my SQL skills. In addition to that, watching him solve LeetCode problems really helped me understand better how to approach SQL problems. See an example below.
3. Joshua Starmer
Joshua Starmer, the founder of StatQuest, will always be my number one resource for reviewing Statistics concepts or different kinds of Machine learning algorithms. For me, he is a must to follow because of his amazing ability to teach the concepts clearly. If you are taking any Statistics or machine learning courses, I highly encourage you to watch his videos if you struggle with a particular concept. I was sold by him when I tried to learn about random forests for the first time. Check out the video below and see for yourself how well he explains the material.
4. Tina Huang
Tina is excellent when it comes to getting overall Data Science career advice. I came across her YouTube through Ken Jee. One of my favorite videos of her is where she talks about the resume that got her an entry-level data science job. Many students or recent graduates appreciate her for sharing what helped her break into the field. If you are currently working on your resume, check out the video below. The video helped me get a better understanding of how an entry-level data science resume should look like.
5. Emma Ding
I came across Emma when reading her inspiring story on how she landed 4 Data Science offers and doubled her income 2 months after getting laid off. I highly encourage you to have a read. See the link below:

I contacted Emma personally and just wanted to pick her brain on how she made it happen. Her YouTube channel really helped me to chose what would be the right data science position for me. In addition to that, her videos on how to manage your time during the job search and what to do before an interview really helped me create a strategic plan to land a job successfully.
