So you want to be a data scientist, you’ve done your research about the field, about the subfields, you know – vaguely – what interest you in the field, what area you may want to get into and explore further, and you are ready to put in the time and effort to shine.

But, where do you start?

The internet is full of all kinds of tutorials that could teach you all aspects of data science. They exist in all formats, written, video, webinars, and even in-person lessons. Not just that, if you prefer books, there are tons out there targeting people from all different levels and background knowledge.

A Learning Path To Becoming a Data Scientist

That is great because you have the choice to browse and select the method that works best for you. Some prefer books, while others may want to learn by listening to an audiobook or a podcast on your way to work or when you’re cooking. Others may go with written tutorials or maybe watch some video tutorials on YouTube or other platforms.

Regardless of your preferred format, your purpose is to find good, straightforward materials that you can use to learn the aspects of data science hassle-free, and if possible, charge-free, as well.

That being said, humans are visual creatures; we learn best from what we see that what we hear or read. That’s why many people choose to watch video tutorials to learn any new skill they need. In this article, I will walk you through 5 YouTube playlists that you can watch to get the knowledge you need to start with data science.

7 Tips For Data Science Newbies

№1: Data Science 101 By Data Professor

The first playlist on this list covers data science basics, the Data Science 101 playlist by the Data Professor. This playlist contains 46 videos – as of writing this article – that go through all the fundamental concepts of data science in easy, simple-to-follow, and short videos.

The videos in this playlist don’t only focus on the technical side of data science. They also contain recommendations for books, certificates, and other free resources you can use along your data science learning journey.

What’s good about this playlist – and the entire channel of the Data Professor – is how it’s active and always updated to keep up with the recent advances in the field.

№2: Intro to Data Science By Steve Brunton

One amazing playlist to learn all the fundamentals of data science and Machine Learning is the Intro to Data Science playlist by Steve Brunton and his team. Steven Brunton is an associate professor of mechanical engineering and applied mathematics and a data science fellow at the University of Washington in Seattle.

Although professor Brunton is an academic, his videos are not in a very academic style. Each video is less than 10 minutes and only focuses on thoroughly explaining one aspect of data science and machine learning.

Professor Brunton channel also includes a fantastic linear algebra playlist that teaches the basic linear algebra knowledge used in data science.

№3: CSE 519 – Data Science Fundamentals By

Steven Skiena

This playlist contains the data science course taught by Steven Sol Skiena at Stony Brook University. Steven Skiena is one of the distinguished computer/ data science professors and the director of the AI institute of Stony Brook.

Professor Skiena has a very easy-to-understand approach to explaining complex concepts mixed with a light sense of humor to keep things light. He is also very active and responsive to most comments and questions on his video lectures.

Since the CSE 519 playlist videos are in lecture format, they are longer than an hour-long each. His channel also includes playlists for other important computing aspects, such as algorithm analysis and programming basics.

№4: Data Science By freeCodeCamp.org

One of the most famous and well-designed resources for learning – pretty much – anything tech-related, is freeCodeCamp.org. The website offers full courses that you can follow to learn all different aspects of tech, and data science is no exception.

But, aside from the official side for freeCodeCamp, their YouTube channel offers many playlists for all their written tutorials. The Data Science playlist includes 10 independent videos, some longer than an hour, that focus on some aspect of data science.

Among these videos, you will find ones that use Python and others that use R programming languages. In addition to videos focusing on certain data science packages, such as PyTorch, Numpy, and Pandas.

№5: Data Science Full Course For Beginners By

Codebasics

Last but not least on the list is the Data Science Course playlist by Codebasics. This playlist is perhaps the largest one on this list, containing 108 videos, and more is yet to be uploaded.

This playlist is a great place to start, especially if you’re new to the tech field with no previous knowledge. The playlist covers all the basics starting with programming basics, maths basics, visualization, and then the fundamentals of data science and machine learning.

The Codebase channel also includes playlists that focus on version control, data structures, and how to use and optimize your Jupyter Notebook environment.

Takeaways

YouTube is the largest and best video streaming website out there; if you want to learn a new skill – no matter what it is – chances are you will find more than one video tutorial for it on YouTube.

So, it is very clear why you would think of YouTube as your main resource for learning various data science aspects. But, which videos should you watch? If you tried searching data science on YouTube, you would probably end up with hundreds – more likely, thousands – of results from different content providers in different languages – both spoken and programming languages!.

5 Data Science Programming Languages Not Including Python or R

The amount of videos you will find is definitely overwhelming. My goal in writing this article is to help you decide what videos to watch to get yourself started with data science. I chose these playlists because they are whole, clear, and easy to follow for beginners and those with some existing knowledge that same.

Give them a try, see which one works best for you and stick with that one. All you need is to be persistent and keep on learning.
