4 Upcoming Data Science Events You Should Consider Attending

April has a lot of learning to offer.

Since COVID hit a little over a year ago, we all got stuck in our homes, not being able to go to work, school, have fun, or attend entertainment or educational events. Although being stuck inside is bad on many levels, there are some benefits to being indoors all the time. COVID had forced universities and event holders to organize and host their events online, allowing people from all over the world to attend—including people who wouldn’t be able to attend these events otherwise.

Yes, some events pre-COVID offered online streaming during the event, but not all of them. Now, almost all events are online and most are available either free of charge or for a small fee.

There are so many great webinars, conferences, and virtual events right now, that sometimes I wish I could attend them all. I mean, you could never run out of things to learn! But, I know that I can’t attend everything, mostly because of time constraints.

So, I decided to go through all Data Science-related events for this month and choose the four events that I believe would be very beneficial to attend, and I thought to share these events with you in case you’re looking for good events to tune in to and learn something new, or just to socialize with the community.

№1: Advanced Computation for Data Science Seminar

April 9th and 10th

Offered by the South Connecticut State University computer science department is this two-day lecture series focusing on the use of advanced computation in the field of data science. Advanced computations have many applications in various fields within data science, including machine learning, big data, computer version, and data mining.

These 2-day seminar lectures include talks about deep learning and its applications in artificial intelligence, intelligence data analytics applications in constructions, how digital data plays an essential role in healthcare, and the science behind agile data science.

Attending this event has no requirements or registration fee and will benefit anyone in data science or interested in data science. Whether you’re studying maths, computer science, business, or education, you will find something for you during this 2-day event.

№2: AI and AI For Good

April 15th

Harvard university’s data science initiative offers a great talk by Juan M. Lavista Ferres from Microsoft AI for Good Research Lab. AI has been one of the hot topics in recent years, with many skeptical people about its use and the ethical aspects of it.

The AI for Good lab team focuses on applying data science concepts, machine learning, and artificial intelligence to solve humanity’s most challenging problems. Problems such as cultural heritage, health, justice reform, and legal compliance. In this talk, the speaker will walk you through the type of research they do, the problems they tackle, and the impact they hope to have on society.

This webinar is free to attend, and by registering for this webinar, you will be able to receive a recording in case you couldn’t attend it live due to the time difference.

№3: Data Science Day 2021

April 22nd

Every year, the Data Science Institute at Colombia University hosts a day all about data science, that is Data Science Day. This year, the event will be fully virtual and will feature different keynotes, lightning talks, and interactive poster sessions about everything in data science.

The day will include talks addressing AI tools for design and automation, how humans and machines can work together to build a better future, fundamental challenges in applying big data to different domains, and building and implementing massive graph algorithms.

The best part about the day – in my opinion – will be the interactive poster sessions, where you will get the chance to learn the latest in data science research and get in touch with great researchers from all over the world. The tickets for this event is not free, yet it is offered for a small fee of $20.

№4: Data Science & AI Leaders of Tomorrow Expo and Conference

April 24th-25th

The final event on this list is the Data Science & AI Leaders of Tomorrow Conference offered and organized by Georgia Tech, UC Berkeley, UT Austin, and Carnegie Mellon University. This event will be sponsored by huge technological companies, such as Facebook, Microsoft, Google, and Nvidia.

This conference focuses on researchers and students of the organizing universities presenting their latest work in the field of data science. Not just that, in between the presentations, there will be talks given by professionals from the industry about this year’s conference theme, which is the diverse applications of data science and AI.

This conference will be a day and a half event full of educational talks, socializing, and the latest advances in the field. This conference is offered free of charge.

Takeaways

Attending educational Events, lectures and conferences were the main approaches anyone in any field can do to widen their network, get involved in the community, and meet mind-like people. But recently going out to meet new people and discuss research or just recent advancement in technology is not an option – hopefully, that changes soon.

6 NLP Techniques Every Data Scientist Should Know

So, for now, if we want to "meet" new people we have to do it virtually because science doesn’t stop for anything, it will continue to advance and we have to keep up with it. Luckily, once COVID hit, many universities, colleges, and organizers decided to extend all events they offer their students to anyone anywhere wanting to learn something new.

This amazing opportunity has led everyone, everywhere, regardless of their educational background, to attend events they are interested in, events that they couldn’t have attended for financial and location reasons. Otherwise, we could all learn from the best regardless of where we are in the world.

In this article, I suggested 4 upcoming data science-related events that I personally will be attending and hope that you will consider attending as well.
